2013 Colson Canyon Syrah
Santa Barbara County
Our Colson Canyon Syrah is a decidedly cool-climate offering from the Santa Maria Valley appellation. For 21 months, this 100% Syrah was aged in a combination of cooperage by Mercurey, Ermitage, Sirugue, Meyrieux, and Francois Freres.
The color of this wine is arresting; an opaque, inky purple. The cool climate where this wine found its provenance informs the aromatics of this wine; look for elegant notes of violets, graphite and baking spices on the nose of this wine. On the palate, this wine is rich and dense, with a gentle and very pleasant texture. Notes of plum, dark chocolate and roses cover the palate. This lovely Syrah is completed with a nice, long, lingering finish.
"From a unique vineyard site high above the Santa Maria Valley comes this bottling by the Fess Parker family that shows white pepper, tart elderberry, a touch of tar and dried herbs on the somewhat restrained nose. There is decent herbal lift to the black cassis and blackberry fruit, with hints of lavender and dried tarragon." ~ 92 points - Wine Enthusiast
“The 2013 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is a big, rich, full-bodied beauty that gives up lots of black raspberry, chocolate, spice and vanilla bean in its mouth-filling, pleasure-bent style. Fermented with 30% whole clusters and aged 21 months in 38% new French oak (the balance was in once used or older barrels), drink it over the coming 4-6 years.” ~ Wine Advocate
