Epiphany Wine Co
Santa Barbara County
It may be an uncommon grape in the United States, but it is a key component of many Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. Our Counoise is sourced from Rodney’s Vineyard on our own Fess Parker Estate in the Santa Ynez Valley. We harvested the 2013 vintage late in the fall, which allows for the grapes to mature on the vine giving the wine its rich, wood-like quality. We barrel age this wine for 20 months in large format, 500-L French oak puncheons. It is then bottle aged for a year prior to its release.
Counoise has a beautiful gem-like, dark garnet color. The nose is earthy, of sandalwood, graphite and forest floor with a hint of baking spices. This is balanced out by fruit aromas of black cherry, red plum and raspberry compote. These aromas translate into the mouthfeel of the wine which also inspires blackberry and a delicate wild strawberry. Cinnamon spice and vanilla bean round out the palate.
