2013 Stagecoach Syrah
Stagecoach Vineyard in Napa Valley is a rugged and dramatic wonderland of rocky, volcanic terroir that offers fruit just as dynamic and complex as the views from its 1,750 foot peak. The site’s extreme conditions support a longer growing season and allow for intensely concentrated, mineral-driven Syrah reminiscent of the storied and long-lived wines from northern Rhône. Using this as our inspiration, we focused on using only French oak in the cellar. A combination of new and older barrels for 20 months resulted in a Syrah that is at once powerful and elegant and that will continue to impress for years to come. If you’re like me and prefer instant gratifi cation, a couple hours of decanting will allow the wine enough breathing time to expose its myriad layers of fl avors and textures.
The wine’s deep opaque purple is mesmerizing. On the nose, it offers restrained notes of cassis, blueberry, vanilla bean, fennel, crushed rock, and acacia flower. Its rich, full-bodied entrance still manages to feel polished and pure on the palate, with excellent concentration and length.
“Coming from the Stagecoach Vineyard in Napa Valley, the 2013 Syrah Stagecoach Vineyard is another beautiful wine that shows how good this vintage was for Napa. Possessing fabulous purity, depth and concentration, with loads of black currants, lead pencil shavings, smoked earth and pepper, it might be the finest vintage of this cuvee I’ve tasted. Raised 20 months in 38% new French oak, it will evolve nicely for 2-4 years and keep through 2025.” ~ 93 points from Wine Advocate
"Big, black and bold, this burly wine from the mighty mountain where Stagecoach flourishes rumbles in smoky oak and leather. Tannins are grippy yet smoothly integrated enough to provide a plushness to the proceedings." 90 points from Wine Enthusiast
