Although primarily known as a blending grape in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines of France's Southern Rhone Valley, we decided to make the 2015 Counoise (pronounced "koon-WHAZ") as a stand-alone varietal because of its outstanding fresh and bright qualities. This Counoise is sourced entirely from Rodney's Vineyard located on the Fess Parker Winery home ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley. Aged 21 months in large format, 500-L French oak puncheons, 100% of which was 2-year old French oak.
At first glance, you will notice its beautiful dark gem-like garnet color. Dark cherry, wild black raspberry are prominent on the nose followed by notes of red plum, vanilla and baking spices. The palate is dominated by black cherry, plum and wild strawberry boasting hints of cinnamon, vanilla and sandalwood. This is a fruit forward wine with softer tannins and medium acidity, making it a good match for grilled or roasted meats and hearty sausages and stews.
