2017 Counoise
Description
"A wild array of aromas invites the nose deep into this rare display of Counoise as a solo star, ranging from coriander and turmeric to carnations and light red fruits. The palate is loaded with garam masala spices that play up against a bright red-fruit backdrop. This would work with a slight chill as well." ~ Wine Enthusiast
"...another intriguing wine in this range from Epiphany. Crushed flowers, spice, cherry and sweet spice lift from the glass in this attractive mid-weight red. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years in order to capture its youthful allure." ~ Antonio Galloni's Vinous
"A great example of this variety...has lots of spiced red (and some black) fruits as well as peppery herbs and loamy soil notes. It's medium-bodied, has a great mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish." ~ Jeb Dunnuck
Counoise tends to be a low-yield, late-ripening crop, which in turn produces a high-quality grape. Generally used in blends, we have chosen
to use this varietal as a standalone to showcase its quality and complexity. On the nose, aromas of dark cherry, wild black raspberry and red plum dominate, with secondary notes of cedar, anise, vanilla and baking spices. Black cherry, plum and wild strawberry coat the palate with finishing notes of cinnamon, vanilla and sandalwood.
The 2017 Counoise would be a perfect complement to sausage and shrimp jambalaya, grilled lamb chops or stuffed bell peppers.
