2016 Colson Canyon Syrah
"Roasted figs, grilled pork, bacon fat and coffee liqueur provide a deliciously savory profile on the nose of this bottling. Blackberry juice meets with smoke on the palate, where strong tannins uphold the wine's medium weight." ~ Wine Enthusiast
"...powerful and dark, with tons of both fruit and the structural intensity that is such a signature of this rugged mountain site. The dark red and purplish fruit remains quite primary, but another year or two in bottle should help in bringing out more aromatic presence and generally greater complexity. Even in the early going, though, the Colson Canyon Syrah is wild and full of personality." ~ Antonio Galloni's Vinous
"Medium to deep ruby, the 2016 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard opens with exotic spices on the nose—pink peppercorn, garrigue, dried lavender—with notes of bacon fat, coffee bean, chocolate and ripe black and blue fruits. Full-bodied, dense, rich and chocolaty, it has very firm but ripe tannins and just enough freshness to counter the rich, savory fruits on the finish." ~ Wine Advocate
"Notes of tea and bay leaves lead into chewy plum flavors in this smoky syrah; for braised beef." ~ Wine & Spirits
Colson Canyon Vineyard is a true mountain site with rugged hillsides and rocky soils, lying on the east side of the Santa Maria Valley in northern Santa Barbara County. These unforgiving conditions stress the vine which creates a small cluster with highly concentrated flavors. Because of this, the 2016 Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah is dense and rich with flavors of black plum, blackberry, dark chocolate and smoked meat.
This Syrah is no shrinking violet and should be paired with foods with big flavor; think grilled New York strip, wild boar or even chili Colorado.
